Historical Romance Discussion > Please help find the title/author of a book

Please help us remember a book my sister & I read back in the '90's...starts out during the civil war in savannah, Ga. the heroine was a tomboy who was furious when union troops invade her plantation home & set up headquarters. In fact the hero who i think is a captain at the time named Jeff ?Clayton? - tho clayton comes up in zero serches under "hero" - when discovering the boy is a girl, he tells her she has dirt on her face. She becomes a lady determined to spy on the union officers and pass information on to anyone who can get it to the confederacy. Jeff discovers her hiding place by her gasp of shock when his superior orders the house to be burned upon departure. Jeff is forced to drag along the heroine to prevent her spilling the secrets. Somehow they are separated and time passes. They are reunited in the new American West when a woman from Jeff's past shows up determined to destroy the heroine..and Jeff is by then promoted to a Major because he saves an Indian boy staked out in the sun, left to die, and who asks his rescuer's name and the indian boy says Major Jeff ?Clayton? I will not forget...which is good because the heroine and jealous woman are later kidnapped by Indians and the heroine is sacrificed by the woman because the heroine is Jeff's lady, unknowingly saving the heroine because the Indian is the boy's father. The jealous lady is scalped. That is all that we can remember. If you can help thanks so much!!!
