It isn't exactly new, but it is definitely a new trend. (Remember Forever by Judy Blume published in 1975?)New Adult fiction features books that are about that "coming of age" time, usually late teens and early twenties. These books can feature edgier themes than you may find in a young adult romance, including sex, violence and more. These books are marketed to young women in the age ranges of 18-30. No doubt that age range of actual readership is older.

Will you be (or are you already) reading this genre?

Here are some samples of books in this genre:

And here is a sample book description of one of them!

Forgiveness proves elusive, and trouble finds her anyway when she discovers a secret club at school connected to the death of her best friend. She learns that swim team members participate in a “Fantasy Slut League,” scoring points for their sexual acts with unsuspecting girls.

Brooke, wracked with guilt over her friend’s death, decides to infiltrate the league by becoming one of the “unsuspecting girls,” and exact revenge on the boys who stole away her best friend. An unexpected romance complicates her plans, and her dogged pursuit of justice turns her reckless as she underestimates just how far the boys will go to keep their sex club a secret.

(This is a New Adult fiction book with mature themes.
Adelaide Bruce was just a girl in braids when her brother's best friend, Naval Captain Lord Drayton, left for war. Now, five years later, Lord Drayton has returned to London with hideous battle scars that have made him a social pariah. Adelaide doesn't see Roan's wounds, but rather the man she has always secretly loved. Although she has been courted by a handsome lord with marriage on his mind, it is Roan she secretly desires.

Roan is stunned when he is reacquainted with Addy Bruce. In the years that have passed, Addy has grown into a true beauty and the toast of the ton. He is not sure which surprises him more—her transformation, or the fact she is the only woman who treats him as though his scars do not exist. When Roan learns of Addy’s engagement to a rival, he must move fast…or lose her forever.

Please note: LITTLE MISS INDEPENDENT is a short novella (9,700 words) that was originally published in THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF REGENCY ROMANCE. The story is a sweet romance (no sex).

For Authors: Want to feature your book in our book club?

For a limited time we are offering The Romance Book Club Monthly Feature for $200 for a 2 week feature.
LOS ANGELES, TORONTO, January 8, 2013 – Harlequin, one of the world’s leading publishers of books for women, will play a central role in an upcoming episode of The Bachelor, ABC’s tremendously popular romance reality series. The episode will feature a special “group date” where the women pose for a Harlequin cover with the newest Bachelor, Sean Lowe. The contestant who shows the most spontaneity, flair and chemistry with Sean will be awarded a three-book cover-model opportunity with Harlequin. The episode is scheduled to air Monday, January 14, 2013, on ABC.

Sean and the competitors will experience what is required to be a successful Harlequin cover model. Harlequin Creative Director Margie Miller will shepherd the group through hair, makeup and wardrobe stages and then have them pose for multiple cover scenarios in a Los Angeles mansion. Each contestant will have an opportunity to impress Ms. Miller and Harlequin Brand Representative, Michelle Renaud, with their ability to pose in a polished and unaffected manner and convey a genuine connection with Sean.

This season on The Bachelor, Sean, 29, the successful Dallas businessman and entrepreneur who charmed fans while wooing Bachelorette Emily Maynard, meets 26 potential soul mates and gets another shot at love as the Bachelor. Sean was blindsided in the Caribbean island of Curaçao when Emily rejected him, and viewers saw the devastated Sean wrestling to make sense of her decision. Thankfully, Sean did not give up on his dream of love and he now knows with certainty that the time is right for him to risk it all again to try to find the right woman.

“What makes The Bachelor so compelling—searching for true love and ending up with your soul mate—is what our novels are all about. This is a real Harlequin story come to life,” said Ms. Renaud. “And The Bachelor and Harlequin are a great fit, because people know both always have a happy ending.”

Read Chapter 1 now!

Chapter 1
April 1817

Twenty-one-year-old Emma Smallwood carefully dusted the collection of favorite books atop her dressing chest. It was the one bit of housekeeping she insisted on doing herself, despite Mrs. Malloy’s protestations. She then carefully wiped her cherished teacup against any dust particle daring to lodge there. The cup and saucer were a gift from her mother—fine porcelain rimmed with real gold.

Emma set the cup and saucer back atop the leather-bound volume of Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy. She angled the cup to best display the image on its side—a lovely painting of a graceful gondola in Venice.

Emma had never sipped from the gold-rimmed cup. But she did like to look at it. To remember her mother, gone these two years. To remember a young man who had once left roses inside it. And to imagine visiting Italy someday herself.

Morning ritual finished, Emma stowed her cleaning supplies and checked the chatelaine watch hooked to her bodice. She closed the cover with a satisfying snap. Precisely as she’d thought. Time to go down and send off their last remaining pupil.

Reaching the bottom of the stairs, she saw Edward Sims standing in the hall, fidgeting with his valise. He wore a smart frock coat and top hat, and looked the picture of a young man ready to take on the world.

“All set, Mr. Sims?”

He turned. “Yes, Miss Smallwood.”

Though she was only four years his senior, Emma felt a fondness bordering on the maternal when she looked at the young man who had lived with them for most of the last three years. She glanced around the empty hall. “Has my father bid you farewell?”

Mr. Sims shifted and shook his head. “I have not seen him this morning.”

Emma forced a smile. “What a pity. He shall be so sorry to have missed you. I know he wanted to be here to see you off.”

Her father ought to have been there. But no doubt he had gone to the churchyard to visit her grave. Again.

Mr. Sims gave an awkward smile. “Tell him good-bye for me, and thank him for everything.”

“I shall.”

“And I thank you especially, Miss Smallwood. I learned a great deal from you.”

“You are very welcome, Mr. Sims. I wish you every success at university.”

From the front window, she watched the young man walk past the Smallwood Academy sign, and down the cobbled lane, feeling the wistful letdown she often felt when a pupil left them. This time all the more, since there were no new students to replace him.

The house seemed suddenly quiet and empty. She wished Mr. Sims had a younger brother. Six younger brothers. She sighed. Perhaps even amiable Mr. Sims would hesitate to recommend Mr. Smallwood as tutor, considering how little her father had actually been involved in his education. But how would they pay their cook-housekeeper and maid, not to mention the languishing pile of bills, without more pupils?

Emma walked to the desk in the family sitting room, pulled out the bound notebook she kept there, and flipped past previous lists:

Books read this year.

Books to read next.

Improvements needed to boys’ chambers.

Economizing measures.

Places to visit someday.

New texts and primers to order for next term: None.

Diversions to improve Papa’s moods/Improvement noted: None.

Pupils by year.

Her pupil lists, which had grown shorter with each passing year, included notes on each young man’s character and his plans for the future.

She turned to the list from three years before, running her finger over the few names, lingering on one in particular.

Phillip Weston. Kind and amiable. Second son. Plans to follow his brother to Oxford and read the law.

The brief note hardly did him justice. Phillip Weston had been her only true friend among her father’s pupils over the years.

Seeing his name caused her to turn to another page. Another list.

Prospective pupils for the future: Rowan and Julian Weston?

Emma thought again of the letter she had sent a fortnight before. She knew perfectly well Henry and Phillip Weston had two younger half brothers. Phillip had mentioned them often enough. Julian and Rowan were at least fifteen by now—older than Phillip when he’d been sent to the academy.

But they had not come.

She had broached the subject with her father several times in the past, suggesting he write to the boys’ father. But he had hemmed, hawed, and sighed, saying he was sure, if Sir Giles meant to send his younger sons to them, he would have done so already. No, more likely, Sir Giles and his second wife had eschewed their humble establishment in favor of prestigious Winchester, Harrow, or Eton.

“Well, it would not hurt to ask,” Emma had urged.

But her father had grimaced and said maybe another day.

Our authors are also really active in and around the place, so strike up a chat and ask questions. But, really, the best way is to try your chance and hit that big red 'submit' button on our online form!

I will offer the following advice, however: our publishing model moves fast. At the moment, we're averaging about two and a half weeks for initial response, and about three and a half months from acquisition to publication. This means that the manuscripts I accept have to be in excellent shape from the get-go. We just don't have the time to do the rounds of structural editing that more traditional publishing models do, so the barrier to publication is probably a little higher for us. My best advice is to get your manuscript read by someone you trust to tell you the truth. This is probably not your mom. You need someone who will be brutally honest about what isn't working, where the holes are, where the characters fall down, where you take author short-cuts. A professional editor can also help you with this sort of reading. Make sure your manuscript is the best you can make it, and then proofread, proofread, proofread.

And then send it to me!

How stories are selected
I read all submissions to Escape Publishing myself. Initially, I'll receive the first three chapters, and then make the decision as to whether I want to read the full. Reasons to reject based on three chapters include:

pacing problems (in particular, very linear story-telling: this happened, then this happened, then this happened)

narratives that start long before (or after) the story: that is, too much back story, or the narrative begins by setting up the story instead of actually starting with the story

very generic or well-used stories without a focus on what makes them different

not enough focus on the romance

After requesting a full, I read to make sure the characters are well-developed, the story and plot are interesting and engaging, and, of course, that the ending is happy. I'm also looking for spark, emotional engagement, and maturity of writing. Remember, we don't have a lot of editorial time, so I need to make sure the story is at near-publishable quality already.

Here's the secret about all submissions: we want to buy your book. We really do. We're all readers, and we want to be swept away. So it's your job to go ahead and do the sweeping. Make me laugh. Make me cry. Or, even better, make me sigh.

Chances are, if your story makes you do any of the above, there's a good chance it'll do the same for me.

Thanks so much for having me along, Tara. I hope I've answered your questions. I look forward to hearing from your readers!

One night. That was all it took to change their lives forever. Captains Jason Randal and Tony Richards have physically survived the war in the Peninsula, but inside they are slowly wasting away. Until the night they discover a reason for living: each other. This is a short story (4200 words) featuring Jason Randal and Tony Richards, the heroes from The Courage to Love, Brothers in Arms Book One.

Read an excerpt now!

Chapter One
Portugal
September 28, 1810

“Are you all right, Lieutenant?” Jason stopped beside Bertie Thorne. The young man had seen his first action yesterday at Busaco, and he’d looked green around the gills when Jason had seen him not long after the battle was over. He’d say they won if the victory hadn’t been steeped in carnage.

Thorne stood and saluted. “I’m all right, sir,” he said. His voice was rough. Either crying or throwing up had produced that. Jason himself had thrown up after his first battle. Fear and excitement could both upset a man’s constitution.

“Good.” Jason patted him on the back and made eye contact with Thorne’s friend, Lieutenant Haversham, who was sitting next to the boy before the fire. Both still wore their dirty uniforms, but not an inch of either uniform was out of place. Order was of the utmost importance in war. When a man was steeped in chaos, the very things that seemed so onerous at home—a well-maintained wardrobe, punctuality, decorum—were the very things that soothed his soul and kept him sane at war. Say what you will about the army—it was a well-dressed, well-oiled machine.

Haversham looked unflappable, as usual. “Captain Randal,” he said by way of a greeting. He gave Jason a nod to indicate he’d take care of the other lad, though he wasn’t much older. He’d been well on his way to mad when Thorne had shown up. The two made quite an odd pair, Thorne so wild and a jokester and Haversham so staid and solemn. Haversham had been with the Fourteenth Light Dragoons since before Talavera, over a year now.

Jason shook his head as he turned away. Time seemed to be slipping through his fingers. Each day he felt the constriction of it, as if each passing minute were a noose tightening around his neck, choking the life out of him. There was so much he wanted to do, so much he wanted to see, yet he was chained to this bloody war like Prometheus on the rock, the bastard French eating away at his heart as the mythical eagle ate away at that poor Greek’s liver.

As he trudged through the camp Jason tried to feel the horror, the outrage that had filled him in the beginning after a battle. Now he felt…nothing. No anger, no sorrow, no relief, even. Survival just meant one more day of wading through the muck of an army camp, checking uniforms and filling out forms until the next orders came through, and then it was riding, endless riding, across hostile terrain until he ran into the enemy, almost as if by mistake. They tried to kill each other, and then he moved on to the next army camp and started the entire process over. It was mind-numbing monotony broken by heartbreaking carnage, if he still had a heart to break.

He had to stop and lean against the corner support of a nearby tent as another wave of that foolish breathlessness struck him. It had been happening more and more lately. Not during a battle, thank God, but at times like this, when he had nowhere to go and nothing to do and he let his morose thoughts swamp him. No matter how hard he tried he couldn’t catch his breath, and panic began to overtake him as spots danced before his eyes. He leaned down and rested his hands on his knees, his head hanging low, and stayed like that until the feeling passed and he could breathe again.

He straightened and then yanked on his jacket to set it to rights. After adjusting his shako so it sat firmly on his head again, he looked around with a glare, ready to address anyone who had seen his weakness. Thankfully there was no one about. He was frustrated and hungry and wondering where in the hell Tony was, so he stalked off in search of his best friend. Tony could usually talk him out of his blue devils. He was really the only thing that could get any reaction from him these days. More often than not the reaction was a good throat-clearing bout of angry words, but it was better than nothing. He hated the nothingness. Hated it.

As he approached their tent he was surprised to see it was dark. He’d expected Tony to be back from his meeting with His Lordship by now. He was good and pissed about not finding him here. He was ready for a good row.
